True for each and every person is the desire to be heard, seen and valued, yet fulfilling that desire can sometimes be challenging.
Driven By Fear
Inside of you, you know you have the knowledge and you know what to do, the problem is you have fear…fear that you will get fired, damage your reputation, lose face, be ‘blacklisted’, damage the relationship forever, won’t be liked, fear that you will be misunderstood, and fear that you will hurt the other person’s feelings.
Your reaction? You typically do one of two things, you will either avoid the conversation all together or you engage in a “heated debate” that you are attempting to disguise as a conversation. To further complicate the engagement and regardless of your reaction of choice, you rationalize, justify and reason with yourself why your choice is valid and substantiated. You’re not alone in this behavior. We all justify our avoidance by saying things like: ‘they won’t listen anyway’, nothing will change’, ‘everything just makes the situation worse’, and ‘it’s simply not worth the effort’. The impact? An internal battle. So, if in five minutes, five days or five weeks, you are still fighting that internal battle, it should become clear to you that what you really need to do is have the REAL conversation.
Acting Without the Right PreparationContrary to the options stated above, it may be that you do start the conversation, but you do so with the wrong person or without a solid definition of what you want as an outcome. This results in not guiding the conversation to the desired outcome, agreement or commitment.
Somewhere in the dialogue (or monologue), you end up getting triggered and spin the conversation in a hundred different directions that it was never intended to go, thus, not finishing the conversation and bringing it to resolution. Then it becomes a bundle of negative energy with damaging consequences and becomes evident as a nagging internal battle.
